King Petar Krešimir IV
The Croatian King from 1058 – 1074. He had the Byzantine Empire recognise him as supreme ruler of the parts of Dalmatia which Byzantine had controlled, towns and islands. At the time the empire was at war both with the Seljuk Turks in Asia and the Normans in southern Italy, so Krešimir took the opportunity and avoiding an imperial nomination as proconsul or eparch, and with this crafty diplomatic move, achieved the centuries old dream of Croatian rulers to join Dalmatian towns and islands to the Croatian state.
