With the arrival of Roman rule, Aenona took on the attributes of an urbanised settlement. As a main street (cardo) it served as the street which led from the Forum towards the city gates (50 or so metres southeast of the Lower Gate). In the opposite direction (decumanus) ran the street from the Upper Bridge to the forum. These two main streets determined the street grid for communication, in a square system.
